Personally, I would like Splunk to provide a fix_my_ulimits_to_recommended_values.sh script that would either keep the current settings (if they're already exceeding minimums), or bump them (if they're not there yet)
It wouldn't be horrible to make some custom kickstarts, probably, that would do a post script that adjusted everything, too (for my own stuff) – but too often I'm handed a server as per Corporate Standard™ and have to deal with whatever the Powers That Be™ have deigned to do, and then make changes atop that
