As mentioned a couple weeks ago, Avnet has finalized the purchase of my former employer, Seamless Technologies. All of STI was brought over “intact” – ie, we’re still a unit, and Avnet purchased us for the people – but it’s very weird to go from such a small company (about 60 people) to such a …

updates to connexions modules
Starting this week, and continuing over the next several weeks, there will be several updates and expansions coming to my published Connexions Collection (original publishing comments), “Debugging and Supporting Software Systems“. I would love to collect feedback and be able to incorporate any suggestions for improvement that you may have. Please feel free to either …

happy 60th
Had she not died in August of 2008, my aunt Cindy would have turned 60 today. But she did, so she’s not. I am still thankful that after another several years, I still cannot dredge-up any negative memories of the entire time I knew her. And I can say with confidence I will see her …

We moved three spots this month.
adoption fundraising
This month we hit 60% on our funding target! We have a ways to go, but we have our referral fee, and one flight covered ~ish. Thanks again to everyone who has helped, who would like to, and to those who are just keeping us in their thoughts and prayers. Our main adoption blog.
It’s [still] Not Too Late!
Due to weather and other concerns, the spring classes at PMBC won’t start until this Sunday – 10 Feb. So. It’s [still] Not Too Late! I’ll be starting that class at 1700 in two days đ There are several others, too – but mine’s the best đ
more irrational gun maneuvering – president obama living up to [my] expectations
I was harshly criticized a few years ago when I pointed-out Mr Obama’s anti-gun stances. While several good things for gun owners did happen in his first term, irrational exuberance over the recent shooting in Connecticut has led Vice President Biden to say the following: “The president is going go act,” said Biden, who is …

more fixes for patents
An addition to my previous post on patents is due. If you are a non-producing entity, ie you have a patent “just to have it” (you’re a company, not a person, and you only have patents to use as legal ammunition), you relinquish rights to sue over infringement. If you are not producing anything the …

thanksgiving 2012
There are a few biggies that stick out in my mind to be thankful for this year: my wife Christina a great job – the customers aren’t always amazing, but my job is pretty darn good being on the waiting list for our adoption from Ethiopia family – extended and immediate friends – all over the country and world
plugins galore
I found the Auto Tweet plugin today and have added it along with several others to the pantheon of WordPress additions that make up this blog. WP is awesome – the plugin architecture is super cool. But there are times when I wonder why more of the plugins haven’t been made core aspects of the product …

mirror status – m0n0wall
The locale needs to be updated (from Philadelphia to Germany), but I have been reinstated as a m0n0wall mirror. I noticed that downloads had dropped-off over the past few months, and after contacting Manuel Kasper (the creator/maintainer of m0n0wall), found out that the mirror script he runs to maintain an active list had dropped me …

fingerprints
The final stage of bureaucratic folderol to endure is Thursday when we get our fingerprints done for the USCIS check. Root for a smooth day đ
dossier done
Our adoption dossier is done (excluding USCIS approval)! Woot! Now to wait.
next bglug meeting: topic ‘raspberry pi’; speaker jordan keyes; 1900 (7p) 20 september @collexion hackerspace
After several months, the Bluegrass Linux User Group (see also G+ page) is resuming regular meetings in conjunction With Collexion – a hackerspace in Lexington KY. Our first (next) topic is “The Raspberry Pi“, presented by Jordan Keyes (creator of twil.tv (also on youtube: http://youtube.com/twildottv)), at 1845 (6:45p) at Collexion. We’ll plan to “start” at …

dossier
Had a great update this afternoon – one document we were convinced was wrong for our dossier has been verified to be acceptable! Woohoo.
golly, batman
My wife posted recently about the excitement of compiling our dossier. Last night we found out we are two documents (and immigration approval) away from document authentication and translation. At that point, we are going to be in the queue awaiting a referral. Woot!
new host!
Woot – everything has been migrated to the new hosting provider. Hopefully it all runs right now đ
host migration
As mentioned recently, I am about to be switching hosts from my current VPS provider, Tektonic. I have found a non-VPS ISP that meets the requirements I’d previously outlined, and have everything but the MySQL databases for WordPress instances sync’d to the new host. With a bit of luck, the migration will be invisible to all 4 …

preliminary update on kirk’s crash
All who knew Kirk Aragon are still in shock over his sudden and tragic loss Sunday. The N&O called me this week for a brief interview, and some of what I had to say is in an article published today by Aliana Ramos, along with the following preliminary information about the crash: The private-plane crash …

reading again
Wow. It’s been several months since I last posted a book review. I have been reading in the mean time – just haven’t gotten around to posting any of them hereon. In the intervening months I’ve read {{1434}} by {{Gavin Menzies}} (follow-on to 1421) and {{The Lost City of Z}} by {{David Grann}}. I’m currently reading …

new connexions collection available
I have been working on my Connexions submissions again recently, and have a collection ready for use (it will be growing as time goes on): “Debugging and Supporting Software Systems” I realize there are some small typos in the current text, but I will be addressing that in a upcoming revision đ I’d love to …

lightsquared attacking gps manufacturers
The LightSquared situation keeps getting more interesting. InfoWorld has another story on them attacking GPS manufacturers for not being more careful about filtering adjacent frequency bands (per a DoD recommendation from 2008). LightSquared is at loggerheads with makers and users of GPS (Global Positioning System) over interference between the navigation system and its planned cellular LTE (Long-Term …

the fcc decides to intervene on lightsquared
I’ve taken an interest in LightSquared recently. Today InfoWorld reports that the FCC “won’t allow LightSquared’s proposed mobile broadband service to interfere with GPS signals, even though the potential interference would be caused by GPS receivers picking up signals outside of their designated spectrum”. So, the devices are in error, but the FCC is going to prevent LightSquared from …

staybridge replies – the next week
In follow-up to my post from last week, two members of the Staybridge staff contacted me on Wednesday of this week. Their replies are posted below. Also, a disclaimer: I never asked for anything to be done in recompense for the situation – I just wanted it fixed. Mr. Myers: Please accept my apology for the …
