About 14 years ago, good friends of the family bought an old farm house with some outbuildings in rural Schoharie County in NY (outside Middleburgh, in a locale called “Hunter’s Land”). One of the first things they wanted to do with the house was to re-engineer the heating, which included properly insulating the house, and …

about time :)
Saw in a tweet from David Pogue that someone has finally implemented a DVR-for-radio. Only took three years for someone to build π I haven’t started playing with DAR.fm yet, but it looks pretty cool!
haiku talk
This past Saturday, I gave a presentation/talk on Haiku for the BGLUG in Lexington KY. For those unfamiliar with Haiku, it is an open-source reimplementation of my favorite OS of all time, BeOS. Instead of having a formal slide deck for the event (as initially planned), I kept it informal with an oral history of …

continuing the book theme…
From the reading-more department, I’m going to attempt to put one review of a book out every week, with a target day of Wednesday. Might end up putting a couple out on some books because they take a longer time to read, but that’s the goal. Today started with a quickie overview of {{Aesop’s Fables}} …

reading via the kindle app
To help fulfill my stated goal of reading more, I have installed the {{Kindle}} app on my laptops. So far I’ve found scores of free ebooks that I’ve either always wanted to read, or figured I’d give a chance since they’re free. The first one I read was a collection of {{Aesop’s fables}}. Some reactions: …

church hunted
Following-up with last week’s post, my wife and I have joined Porter Memorial Baptist Church in Lexington KY. She has already engaged in their Awana program on Wednesday evenings, and has started working with their women’s ministry – so much so that she was asked to setup a facebook group for them (which she has!) …

back
On the 19th of June, I married my sweetheart. We then went on an awesome trip to the Williamsburg VA area. Like all vacations, that one was MUCH too short, but we had a blast. Now we’re sadly back to reality – work, grocery shopping, walking the dog.. but that’s cool because I’m spending this …

cloudy driving in progress
In follow-up to a previous post, I saw this on Wired.com today. Seems Ford sponsored a class at UMich to develop Cloud Computing apps… for the Commute. The new Fiesta can Tweet while it’s driving. Not sure I like that idea… but it’s interesting, to say the least.
denita smith, 1981-2007
As I mentioned a few days ago, I was a juror on a trial. That trial was the State of North Carolina vs Shannon Crawley in the unlawful death of Denita Smith on 04-Jan-2007. Miss Smith’s fiancee, Jermier Stroud, was implicated by the defendant. Mr Stroud is a police officer in Greensboro. Under oath, and …

2.5 months
A lot has happened in the last couple months. I got home from Singapore, having ended my term with Barclays. I found and started a new job. I’ve been apartment hunting. Oh, and I’ve been a member of a jury for the last couple weeks. After it’s over, I can say for whom – but …

one month update
It’s been a month since I last posted on my weight loss attempts. From a month ago, I’ve dropped 11 lbs. For my metric-bound acquaintances: I have no idea, so look it up π Now I have a good (but somewhat costly) problem – I need new pants π
the national museum of singapore
Saturday I went to the museum, as planned. It was pretty interesting, but I would not suggest it either for small kids (probably under 10 or 12, unless they’re really really interested in the history of Singapore) or as place to go if you want to talk about what you’re looking at with the folks …

yet another on the weight loss bandwagon
Along with I’m sure others on planettrilug, I’ve been working on losing some of my heft. I’ve gone back and forth on caring for a long time, but now have some incentives beyond just “it’s good for me”. My first month in Singapore I dropped ~11 pounds. The 4 weeks after that were only an …

back in singapore
I arrived back in Singapore safely early Sunday morning (local time). Other than having to leave my fiancee at home, and now not being able to see her for at least a few weeks, everything here seems to be good. Got the keys and copy of my apartment contract, so all I have left to …

engaged
Last Friday night, on the Brooklyn Bridge, in the rain (sounds like the answer to Clue, doesn’t it?) I officially asked my girlfriend to marry me. Me living in Singapore means that’ll not be as soon as either of us would prefer, but at least it’s in the works. π She told meΒ the rest of …

tokyo
I’m sitting in Tokyo Narita airport right now. My next stop will be my home for the next several months as I begin a job in Singapore with Barclay’s Capital Monday. As of right now, I’ve added yet another two airports to my list, and have one more to go “today” – Dulles and Tokyo. …

eating out, but well
I’ve been back home for a few days, and have been introduced to several more good local eateries, which will have write-ups coming shortly. My sister pointed me to one of her favorites in Cohoes, Bread and Jam, and she’ll be “guest blogging” that post.
the results
I followed-through on my fuel experiment. However, the hoped-for mileage increase did not occur. I was hoping for a 2-3 mpg improvement, and saw 0-1. The good news is that it didn’t decrease my mileage, as I have seen on some vehicles when going up the octane ladder. Guess that means I’m back to buying …
