@smartereveryday I’ll adopt my former coworker’s common statement: “I’m from Missouri” When they can Show Me it works *outside* a simulation (or *very* specific lab conditions), I’ll believe it

@smartereveryday “room temperature superconductivity” has been approximately demonstrated in lab conditions, but always under commercially-inviable constraints (running at 100s of atmospheres of pressure, for example)

@smartereveryday *IF* room-temperature, ambient-pressure method *actually works* – then it’s one of the top-3 (or so) Holy Grails of physics research (along with cold fusion (or just reliable fusion that yields more energy than it takes in)) Lossless energy transmission is truly #astonishing

@smartereveryday HTS tape, whether made with MOCVD or via silver encapsulation, swaging, rolling, and heat treating, is modestly-fragile, but running in LN2 (or via compressor-driven refrigeration) is worlds cheaper than LTS wire running in an LH bath

@smartereveryday I, likewise, *hope* it to be true … but with all the promises over the last ~half-century … I find it *highly* improbable HTS (nominal 77K (aka LN2 temps)) is already great for many applications; HTS tape is harder to make than LTS (nominal 4K) wire, but it *works*

From an early age we learn to conceal our thoughts, telling the prickly and insecure what we know they want to hear, watching carefully lest we offend them. For most of us this is natural β€” there are ideas and values that most people accept, and it is pointless to argue. — 48 Laws Of …
